About Laura Ashley

Laura Ashley has been around since 1953 believe it or not and has since earned a reputation as being one of the world’s most famous brands for home furnishings and fashion which is why people have been looking to Laura Ashley for inspiration for over 50 years. The Laura Ashley storey is a charming one, she and her husband Barnard begin printing fabric in their home which was situated in London. Laura garnered inspiration after attending a Woman’s Institute exhibition at South Kensington’s famous Victoria and Albert museum all about traditional handicrafts.

This gave Laura the idea that she would start to produce her own patchwork quilts however she struggled to find the prints she and fabrics she had in mind so she decided to create her fabric from her kitchen table with her husband by her side.

The problem was Laura didn’t know the first thing about creating fabrics so she had to teach herself from scratch. An initial investment of £10 bought the couple their wood for a screen, the linen and the dyes required, it was then up to them to visit the library to learn as much as much about fabric printing as they could. Their first attempts were small squares which is due to the small area of the flat they were working in.

Around the time of first creating the initial designs the famous film ‘Roman Holiday’ came to the cinemas and every young girl wanted to replicate the Audrey Hepburn headscarf look which was fast becoming the latest must have fashion, the Ashleys being entrepreneurial as they were were quick to react to the nations need for headscarves and were soon producing and selling them in vast quantities in outlets across London such as Heal’s and John Lewis. They then diversified into tea towels and place sets which became popular as they often had a humorous image.

And so the brand was born, from humble beginnings to a multimillion global brand, today selling everything from fashion to bed linen to curtains and rugs.
